Clean Vs Dirty Air Filter

What Happens When an Air Filter Becomes Clogged in Columbus, GA

June 28, 2022

AC filters need replacing every 90 days or so, here in Columbus, GA, or every 60 days if pets or tobacco smoke are already compromising your indoor air. Filters keep a number of pollutants out of your system’s air handler and ensure efficient performance. If you neglect the air filter and it becomes clogged, you’ll cause premature wear on the AC and experience other problems.

Wear on the AC’s Fan Motor

The air conditioner’s fan motor distributes cool air evenly throughout your home, provided that it meets with no obstacles. A clogged filter is one such obstacle, and it will put strain on the motor, causing it to wear out sooner. You’ll know something is wrong when the air pressure decreases and, ultimately, when the AC stops working or blows only warm air.

Lack of Cool Air

Your AC cools your home through the refrigerant that passes the evaporator coil and absorbs heat from the air. A dirty filter, though, lets dirt and grime build up on the coil, hindering its operation and letting the air return to your home no cooler than it was before. Watch out, then, for lukewarm air and extremely long cycles.

Water in the Air Handler

The evaporator coil will freeze when deprived of warm air to absorb. As we said, this prevents your air from becoming cooler, but think also about where the water goes when the ice thaws. The water pooling inside your air handler will invite all kinds of biological contaminants, worsening your indoor air quality and making life miserable for asthma and allergy sufferers.
