3 Things You Should Know About Changing Your Air Filter

April 27, 2017

Your home’s air filter is your first line of defense against irritants and allergens, so it’s important that you learn when and how to change it. Taking proper care of the HVAC system in your Opelika, Alabama home is essential so you can enjoy clean air and a low utility bill.

When to Change Your Filter

Swapping out your air filter is something you should do on a regular basis. Plan to change the filter at least every three months. Take a peek at it monthly to check for visible dust and dirt buildup. If the filter gets dirty before the three-month mark, alter your schedule to change it more often. During the summer and winter months when your HVAC sees the most use, you may need to change the filter as often as once a month to keep air clean.

Which Filter to Buy

Pull out your existing filter and check the measurements for easy guidelines on what type of replacement filter to buy. Your air filter will have a MERV rating between 1 and 12 that determines it’s efficiency at capturing airborne particles. For residential HVAC filters, you’ll typically want something around a 7. While a higher MERV rating means increased efficiency, most residential units aren’t equipped to pull air through the fine mesh of a filter with a rating of 9 or above.

How to Change Your Filter

Swapping out your air filter is a quick and easy job that’s typically as easy as pulling out the old filter to discard it and slipping in the new one. Many units have a sticker on them with illustrated instructions. Every unit is a little different. If you’re having trouble locating or changing your air filter, contact our experienced HVAC technicians for assistance.

In addition to changing your air filter, you should also schedule a full tune-up for your HVAC system once a year. If you’re overdue for your annual visit, contact Sensigreen Heating, Cooling & Insulation at (334) 366-9237 to make your appointment.
